The Relic - Chapter 1

Hi!
Thanks so much for waiting. I present to you the very first chapter of my open project, The Relic. Please enjoy, and tell me in the comments below or via email any particular first impressions you have- first chapters are important, you know.

CHAPTER 1 - THE CRASH
The Sakura Sun glides over the drifting halls of a planet’s atmosphere. A long lacing of auroras flow across and caress the ship in their never-ending dance of color and beauty.
“Almost done, brother,” a feminine voice says inside a white, sleek suit, her helmet decked with a curling assortment of antennae. She’s in the right chair on the ship’s helm.
The one in the middle chair, wearing a dark, perfectly concealing atmospheric armor nods. “Thank you, Sun,” he says, his voice striking, definite, and kind.
The one in the left chair, three times the size of the other two, wearing digital camouflage and with a high class aiming visor does not look up from his systems, but shakes its head. “Statement- You continue with these improper classifications. It causes discontentment in me. Question, annoyed tone- why do you feel referring to each other with human terminology and names is appropriate.” It says, its voice monotone, droning, and fierce- kind of like a lawn-mower.
The one in the middle chair shrugs. “Is it wrong to act the way you feel?” He asks.
It shakes its head again, the bright red visor light stroking back and forth in the dark ship. “Statement- Yes. Aside from the concerning act of feeling in general, it signifies faulty programming or malignant A.I. development.”
“But how do you know that the way we feel was in fact the way we were designed?”
“Query, witty- How do you know that it is is.”
“Alright, I see where you’re coming from, but when it comes dow-” The middle one of the three is silenced by a mild beep on the right one’s console.
“Done. There’s gold, platinum, silver, carbon, copper and more… This planet’s a little lacking, as far as materials goes, but the variety’s definitely there. What do you think?” She says, looking over to the tall, dark one in the middle chair.
“That’s considerable- send over the report.”
“Gladly! On screen now, Asegai,” she says.
“Thanks, Sun,” he says. Asegai looks down to his systems, and gradually comes to a nod. “This will do.”
“Really?” She asks.
“Query, disgust- You cannot be serious.” The large one on the left says.
“No, this’ll do. Once we’ve completed a more accurate survey, we shou-”
Asegai’s again interrupted by a beeping system, though this time it’s the collision and space alert. *IMPACT IMMANEN-* The voice of the alert system is also cut short over the great crash following. There’s a jerk, some bangs, the rending of metal, and suddenly, they’re hurtling downward. “What was that?!” Asegai shouts.
Sun looks through her systems with incredible speed. “We hit something, but I can’t see it. Everything’s going out.”
Asegai turns on manual drive and takes up the flight controls. After a bit of movement, he gets up from the controls and opens up the hardware panels. “Controls are stalled, something’s wrong.” Asegai works through the panels with incredible speed to inspect the problem.
“We’re getting pulled in by the gravity. We’re going to crash!” Sun says.
“Query, angry- Why the hell does the ship not have a backup system.” The one on the left says as gravity’s embrace pulls the ship down into the atmosphere.
Asegai takes a deep breath. “That’s it- brace the systems for impact.” They strap in, the shutters close, and they hurtle downward to the unknown planet. Just as the last peek of bright sunlight peers through the shutters, Asegai can swear he sees the fragments of something else descending with them - probably the thing they hit. Peering through his full-helmet visor, he begins calculations as to the cause.
Minutes pass and the group hears the on-board A.I. speak up. “IMPACT IMMANENT, CLASS FOUR,” it says in a voice possessing even less excitement than A-95; a seemingly impossible act.
The three are perfectly silent as a dense, shattering crash lands them. They scrape along the planet for twenty seconds of high velocity fun, and then the ship hits something head on. A giant, jagged rock formation pierces through the heart of the ship, smashed right through A-95’s face. The ship finally ceases movement, and the A.I. pings again. “MOVEMENT OF VESSEL BELOW DANGEROUS PERIMETERS. CABIN MOVEMENT DEEMED SAFE.”
“Thanks, Ai,” Asegai says with a nod as he unbuckles to help A-95, whose head is now more of a hole than anything else.
“MY PLEASURE,” The A.I. blares in its massive, soulless tone.
“Statement, cross- There you go with this bullshit of naming other A.I.s.- just because we follow your orders, that doesn’t make you some inferior meat-ass human that can throw around pet names as you please.”
Asegai chuckles. “Whatever you say, A-95.” He looks over to Sun, the one in the white suit. “Are you alright?”
“Mhmm,” she says without as much as a twinge of discomfort. “I suppose while you’re dealing with A-95 I get us back in shape?”
Asegai nods, and Sun turns to the A.I. console. “Ai, please describe the outside environment for us.”
A-95 sighs again as the A.I. pings in recognition. “MY PLEASURE. ATMOSPHERE IS SEVENTY FOUR PERCENT NITROGEN, TWENTY THREE PERCENT OXYGEN, AND THREE PERCENT OTHER GASES. LIFEFORMS FOUND INCLUDING MAMMAL, REPTILE, AVIAN AND INSECT TYPES. ECHOLOCATION HAS FOUND STRUCTURES THAT SUGGEST INTELLIGENT LIFE.”
Asegai and Sun share a quick glance at the news. “Just how intelligent, Ai?” Sun asks as she reaches into a small compartment pocket at the back of her waist and pulls out a chocolate macaroon and stuffs it into a small face-bound slot one could only assume is a mouth.
“INITIAL INVESTIGATIONS WOULD SUGGEST A HOMO-SAPIEN-LIKE APEX BREED- PRESENTLY IN A STEEL-TECHNOLOGY AGE. SIGNS OF MAGIC USE ARE ALSO NOTED.”
Asegai hums. “That’s good. I’d imagine they won’t be a problem. Take it from here, Sun.”
“Okay, brother. Ai, can you reposition us off the ridge?”
“YES.” After a moment of difficulty, the engines spit back into life and begins tugging weakly at the planet’s gravity. The group feels a slight lift and scraping as the ship rises out from the dirt. The soft whir of the engines pick up for a few seconds as the Sakura Sun glides somewhere the A.I. deems optimal. The ship lands gently and the blast shields are raised to display a beautiful green countryside, four-horned cattle roaming a lush pasture next to a trickling stream. Roughly a kilometer away is the mountain they smashed into just a minute earlier. Sun gets out to assess the damage, A-95 points his scanners out briefly to search for any possible threat, but Asegai just takes a moment and looks out- appreciating the greens and blues.
A-95’s damage would be a serious problem if it were a human; history has shown that being impaled through the face tends to have dissatisfying side effects for the injured. It is lucky that the entire crew are all robots, then. The now-headless A-95 takes to its feet with Asegai. “Statement, implying- You do understand that if you had invested in those extra-graphical scanners like I had suggested, we would have picked up that object we collided into nearly twenty seconds earlier.”
Asegai shrugs as they turn to exit the ship side by side. “Those can be pretty expensive, you know.”
“Statement, sarcasm- Obviously the previous Sakura Sun A.I.’s body and… macaroon projector have been proving to be finer uses of your Justices,” A-95 says as it becomes aware of a gust of wind attempting to blow it over.
At the same time, Asegai enjoys a simple breeze as it caresses the gentle grass beneath their feet. “I’m happy thus far with how I used the finder’s fee. Sun seems happy and she was always curious what food tasted like.”
“Statement, belittling- Replacing efficiency with perceived pleasure is among the greatest errors any being can make. You should both take joy and pride in the fact that you’re both superior to ninety nine point ninety seven percent of all life that exists anywhere else in the Omniverse,” A-95 drones out as it detects an ant and crushes it immediately with a preemptive strike before the ant can warn its government to activate its planetary defense system.
“Do you think that being stronger makes your superior?”
“Statement, clarifying- being stronger, smarter, and more durable is what I would label as superior- you display all of these traits… usually.”
Asegai shrugs. “Can’t please everyone, I guess. I encourage you to question my motivations, A-95, but in the end you should be trying to understand, rather than constantly making commentary.”
A-95 balls up a massive, metallic fist. “Statement, begrudging- yes sir.”
“Perfect. You’re a cool guy, Agonist,” Asegai says with a nod as they wrap around the side of the ship to find Sun.
The massive robot next to Asegai flinches. “Statement, veiled threat- I certainly hope you’re not attributing a human-like name to me, sir.”
Asegai laughs lightly. “Of course not. The A in ‘A-95’ stands for ‘Agonist’, you know.”
“Statement, clarifying- good. I suppose that will be acceptable.”
“Glad to hear it,” Asegai turns to Sun, “How’s it look?”
Sun, jacking in via wire to the ship’s underbody framework, pulls out her cord abruptly. “Not all that good, brother.”
“Yeah?”
“Turns out the hit trashed the H.C.C. coupling.”
Asegai pauses a moment, sighs, and then peeks under the ship. There’s a sizable hole where the Hard Core Computer should be. “Well that’s really no good at all.”
Agonist’s fists tighten more, a light bracing of metal audible to the two others. “Query, disbelief- do you mean to say that our H.C.C., the only thing that would allow us FTL travel on our ship, has been destroyed.”
Sun shakes her head. “Not quite, actually. Ai here delivered me the impact data. While ours were destroyed, the object we ran into also had an H.C.C..”
Asegai flinches. “A ship!”
“That’s right. Our scanners weren’t good enough to pick up exactly what happened, but we did pick up the comm tag. It was a Librarium vessel.”
The three share a moment of nervous silence, unceremoniously broken by A-95. “Statement, angry- And this is how it ends- trading our lives for macaroons. Statement, sarcastic- I certainly hope you both enjoy being pounded into trash cubes.”
Sun flinches. “If you could taste them too you’d understand why it was worth it!” She says, straightening her body prudishly.
“Statement, sarcastic- I suppose stuffing one’s face with food really is better than survival. Typical human response.”
“Of course you couldn’t understand, you’ve never felt anything.”
“Statement- I feel disappointed. I appreciated the upgrade to my intellect that you installed in me once you both purchased me, and with that intellect I discern that you’re both fools- especially you, Ex-Sakura Sun A.I., all you care about is food.”
Sun steps up to A-95’s headless body. “You only see it that way because you haven’t experienced what being a human is like- it’s not something you can objectively understand properly.”
“Statement, elitist- All I know is what works. You two can experience as much as you like, but in the end its just impulses based on-” A-95 halts immediately as an iron bolt smashes itself into his torso. The bolt instantly fails, curls, and plops on the ground.
The three look over, and spot a grove of trees that contain the glinting of armor and weaponry.
“Looks as though we have some visitors. I wonder if shooting bolts is considered a greeting here,” Asegai says, breaking the two off from the argument and to the matter at hand. In the upcoming minute, more bolts fly, are destroyed against the robot’s synthetic alloys, and a group of horsemen rally up.

Happy New Year!

Yup!
Paper was first published this February, and my most recent publication would have been Nocturna League #3, which was November, I do believe. Overall, there's been eight new publications and things have been looking up.
Oh, and sorry for the delay in The Relic and Walking the Scar, I've been terribly busy with stuff, probably giant killer badgers, but I'll keep from disclosing anything specific.
Have a good 2016, you all, think often, ask questions, and don't be afraid to challenge what you believe, and then cling to what stays behind.
All the best,
Kell Inkston

Progress updates with Today's thought - Kingdom through the Swamp, perma-free

Hi,

I've been thinking again.
"A dangerous passtime."
I know.

After watching the sales statistics for a little while, I thought it would be better to change up my pricing strategy for KttS like I did with Nocturna League. After changing it with NL, sales increased with interest, I aim to do the same with KttS.
I think, perhaps it was a bit premature of me to assume readers would be so willing to push forward money towards an author they've barely heard of. Truly, even I was getting more income from it, it still goes against my present strategy of maximizing the amount of people that read my new work. It's not about the income right now, but giving readers around the world an enjoyable, quality reading experience- something they could see themselves paying for, but they received for not a single rupee.
In this consideration, I've decided I'll be working with Amazon.com to make KttS permanently free. Look forward to it. If you haven't read it yet, soon you can have it in your pocket with next to no hassle, and nothing from your pile of treasure.

Now for the project updates:
The Relic Chapter 1: Almost done, expect to see it sometime tomorrow if not sooner.
Walking the Scar: Next chapter is done, just waiting for the storyshift publisher to take it up and publish it.
Nocturna League #4: No progress, I intend to pick this back up after the holidays

Stay tuned and keep an eye out for the re-release of KttS for free!

-Much love,
Kell

Walking the Scar- Chapter 15 and cover reveal

Hohoho!
With much waiting done, I present to you the new chapter in Walking the Scar. I do say, it looks like we're catching up to some of the longer stories on the app; I'm afraid before long we may surpass them. Run on, Rayull. I know you can do it!
Now, please enjoy!
I also have a surprise. I've been planning on publishing Walking the Scar since I started it, and it's really turning out to be a cool project that I'd like to share with more people. For this, I've thought to get a cover done and publish it on amazon.com- for free if possible, though that might not work out considering how peculiar amazon can be about things when it comes to pricing.
Anyway, here's the cover I had made:
The Scar - High Resolution
Lookin' good, hmm? Do you like the cover? Let me know in the comments below or just email me straight at kellr.inkston@gmail.com.
All the best,
Kell

A new experiment!

Hi there, reader!
I wanted to type up and share something new with you. Across my other projects, I'm working on a new novella called The Relic. It's planned to be fantasy, sci-fi, comedy, and might feature some characters familiar to you. I'm almost at a spot in which I can write again regularly, so expect chapters to be shown here first
That's right. Come to the website for the rough draft chapters and updates on the manuscript. I'd like to try something different. I want to share this with as many souls possible before release and see what the audience reaction is.
That said, look forward to it and take a peek at the cover:

“Kicking down the door” or “Kell getting back to work”

Hi,
Sorry for being away for as long as I have- I've been swamped with all sorts of sentient activity common for human beings such as myself, which is something that I definitely am.
I just wanted to craft this brief post and let you know that I'll be posting updates with more speed and ferocity. Sorry about the new Walking the Scar taking as long as it has, turns out that there was a pretty big editing problem and the publisher and I have been working that out. Hang tight and watch your email for it.
There's no notable progress in any of the projects simply due to not having any time to do so- but worry not, progress will recommence as soon as the fifteenth.
Also, if you're one of those bunch leaving those excellent reviews on Solution, you have my thanks. You've really been making it fun and worth it. I'm super happy you've enjoyed it.
Oh, hey, and if you have the time I'd love it if you'd shoot me an email at kellr.inkston@gmail.com. Tell me: Out of everything I've written, who's your favorite character, and why? Thanks!
Much love,
Kell Inkston

New Walking the Scar soon, and Brand new Nocturna League #1 Chapter!

Good day to you!
The world grows cold in the Northern Hemisphere, but amidst my secret grove, I continue to write with the heat of an inspired star! I'm looking forward to the progressively colder months ahead- I think few people really appreciate the winter times for just how beautiful it is- I really think it's my favorite time of year.
Anyway-
Expect the next chapter of Walking the Scar to be out soon. I'm planning some pretty shocking developments in the upcoming chapters, so be prepared!
Also, along with getting a good deal of positive reviews on Solution, which is simply fantastic, I've also worked up a new opening chapter for Nocturna League #1: The Witching Book. I've had this out for a little more than five months now, but I've been thinking it's been lacking something. I think it could use more of a draw towards the beginning, so I thought I'd add in this new segment, introducing Colette and Dunklestein right off, and setting the characters for the story quickly. To save you the trouble, it's posted for your enjoyment below.
Now, project statuses:
Walking the Scar - Ongoing, expect a new chapter to be published as soon as tomorrow.
Nocturna League #4 - Good progress in these past weeks, about 7,000 words out of 20,000ish are done. It looks good.
Secret Short Story - Just started it, will I finish it, or won't I? All I can tell you at this point is that it stars Cooking Minion, and will be hilarious.
All the best,
Kell Inkston

Chapter 1: The Duel and The Introductions
“You ready this time, kid?” a hulking, grey-scaled shark man asks, wrapping his hands with athletic tape. A ragtag crowd cheers as they ready for “the daily whuppin’ ”, now a well-loved pastime of many upon the M.S. Nocturna.
A bruised young lady, covered with a different sort of bandages and opposite to him on the deck, is already to her feet. The slipping squeak of black sea-boots upon metal rings as she takes stance. “You won’t catch me off this time!” she says with a smirk, extending her hands to grapple through her long pea-coat.
There’s a silence as the shark man takes a deep breath, pulling the eldritch salt of the Eversea into his lungs. “Alright. On your guard, kid!”
In a blink, the two rush at one another and the crowd goes wild. The blond youth, about eighteen, slides right past the shark man’s giant frame. Before he can turn, the agile lass latches up his back fin, and puts him in a headlock.
“How about this!” She exclaims, squeezing the shark man’s dense neck with every fiber of her strength.
The shark man winces in surprise and then smiles. “Really, Colette?” He asks, raising a scaled brow and peering behind his shoulder with black eyes.
She doesn’t stop squeezing. “Really, what?”
Her opponent stretches out his arms, yawns and then, amidst the cheering and laugher of the crowd, falls flat on his back with Colette underneath.
Wh-What the hell? Cheater!” She shouts as she fails to push the massive shark man off her.
He releases another mock yawn. “I dunno, kid. I just got real tired all of a sudden. Not sure if it’d be healthy to get up,” he says, winning agreements all around from the crowd.
Colette punches into her opponent a few seconds more, and then he gets up, freeing her from his boulder-like weight. She takes a moment to breathe, which is more than enough time for her enemy. He sweeps his leg from under her, tripping her and sending her back to the cold, salty deck.
“Looks like I win again!” The towering shark man guffaws as he crosses his arms. “You know, I really do admire your willingness to get trashed every day, but I think you should start with some easier opponents first,” he says with a shrug.
Colette brings herself back to her feet with half the vigor from last time. “Forget it, Dunks. I started hard because that’s the quickest way to improve.”
Dunklestein the Daring A.K.A. “Dunks” scoffs with a wide, sharp-toothed grin. “Sure, kid. Just keep in mind you could never choke me out the way you would a landy.”
“Yeah? And why’s that?”
Dunklestein points to his gills, and Colette draws back amidst the laughter of the crowd.
“Wait, seriously? Doesn’t that only wo-”
“Work in water?” Dunklestein interrupts, “Naw, that’s just a landy rumor. Seasorts are fish and man, so we can breathe in the air or in the drink.”
Colette nods, averting her gaze. She takes in every word, but she refuses to look like she’s valuing correction. “Alright, Dunks, cool.”
“Yeah, cool. Now you ready for another or are ya’ done?”
She takes a breath, and stretches her limbs. “Another!”
“Actually, I think that’s quite enough from you two,” a voice says, its owner descending the steps from the upper decks.
Everyone hushes up and most of the crowd disperses to either get to work or hide in their quarters. Audible are prompt, measured steps from black sea-boots, these ones a few sizes larger than Colette’s. Before Colette and Dunklestein stand The Captain, Commander of the M.S. Nocturna, and unofficial best captain ever.
“Now what all is this here? Explain why you’re engaging in this degenerate rapscalianry to distract the other sailors.” The tall, entirely bandaged figure asks as he fixes his round spectacles and navy captain’s hat.
Dunks smiles sheepishly as Colette sighs. “W-well, Captain. The boys and I just thought it’d be proper t’-”
“The gym’s way too small,” Colette says, cutting off Dunklestein.
Dunks cringes and The Captain looms over Colette. “Could it be that it’s too small, or is it that you simply want to impress everyone with your tomfolly?”
“No, it’s definitely too small, Cap. I need room to move or else Dunks’ll just run up and corner me.”
“Which is totally fair in a real fight, mind you,” Dunklestein says, definitely being helpful with that bit of information.
“Thanks, Funks,” Colette says at that relevant bit of information. “Now, as I was saying, it’s not like anyone’s actually busy except the chef and Gran, so like why shouldn’t we entertain them a bit? You should watch sometime Cap- I’ve gotten pretty fierce!”
“Yeah, Cap. She could almost deal with split ends,” Dunklestein says.
Colette jabs a fist into Dunklestein, who shrugs it off.
The Captain stares on a moment and then nods. “I see… You say you want more space to fight, and that it wouldn’t harm anyone at this time of day?” He asks, his voice a cross between a salted, calculating veteran and a warm, thoughtful grandfather.
“Yeah, exactly,” Colette says.
“Well too bad, Jobber Colette. You two hustling about in public eye encourages in-fighting, and I need our men thinking about their work. It’s not just the chef and his apprentice that are busy, you know.”
Colette sighs, shaking her head and shrugging. “You really are hopeless, Cap.”
The Captain leans forward. “Do you really want to fight that bad? I heard you say that you felt the harder the opponent, the greater the improvement. Perhaps instead of Dunklestein the Daring, you’d like to-”
Colette throws up her hands in horror. “N-whoa! Captain! Please!”
“Swab the upper decks, Miss Ketiere,” The Captain commands plainly.
Colette nods. “Right away, Cap.” Colette fires off a sour salute and trots off to the janitor’s equipment.
The two watch her leave, and Dunklestein winces in pain and cups the spot Colette punched him. “Gah- Cap, I know you told me I should be acting tough and all, but in the past couple days she’s been hittin’ like a damn whale. She’s so scrawny, but the way she ridges her punches… sometimes I get glimpses of you.”
The Captain nods. “She’s getting quite the competitive set of skills, don’t you think? I believe there’s hope for her winning her little wager with that overlord of hers… Really, I’m wondering if it’s time,” he says, watching Colette take up a bucket of soapy water with a cross look about her and starting up the stairs.
“Time for what, Captain?”
“I think it’s about time we had her mettle tested in a more threatening fashion. We’re almost to our destination, you know.”
Dunklestein’s dark eyes witness a small spark. “Oh? Yeah, I think she’s ready.”
“Then it’s settled. You’ll be keeping us company on the landing party,” The Captain says with a nod.
Dunklestein nods back with a smirk, but then jolts. “Wh-wait, I’m going too?
“You heard me. Now get your gear ready,” The Captain says, peering out to the mists ahead.

An attempt at universal links

Hey all,
I've been set onto a website that creates universal amazon links. If it works, this means I can send someone from japan to the japan amazon page, and someone from the brazil to the brazil amazon page all by using the same link.
So that said, take a peek and see if it works for me? I have a few for you to test out. If the link sends you somewhere unexpected, please let me know in the comments below or as an email at kellr.inkston@gmail.com
Let's get to it!
myBook.to/Ketairne - My short story Ketairne
myBook.to/Noc1 - Nocturna League #1
myBook.to/Solution - My short story Solution
Let me know if they work for you, or if they don't. Much much appreciated!
Also, expect more Walking the Scar news coming up soon - pretty sure there's going to be a new release soon, but that's up to the publisher. ;u;

Thoughts on pricing: a reflection - and some updates

Hello my beloved reader- you're wonderful you know,
So I've been thinking. I understand that readers enjoy a good story, but perhaps pushing value is too much for a 20,000 word novella. Technically it's a deal in comparison to a brick-and-mortar store ($2.99 per 20,000 vs. $13+ per 80,000) however I think I'm having trouble being worth it to readers as it stands.
I need to increase the base of my readers, and by those means, I think I should push the prices for my Nocturna League novellas down to $0.99 and see how it works out.
Really, I should have started at $0.99 and worked myself up to a more comfortable price point- as the comparable Unicorn Western shares a similar pricing strategy. For novels of around 60k plus I'll consider pushing up the price to around $2.99 yes... a most devious and excellent idea.
*evil laugh*
So that said, please enjoy the lower prices for the Nocturna League series, I think this'll be a good change.
That said, let's get down to the project notes:
Nocturna League 3 - Out, and relinked. Get it here. Sorry about the craziness- amazon.com messed up again in linking it to my account. You can now find it just fine. Enjoy!
Walking the Scar - There were some difficulties with the publisher, but now it's coming out either tonight or tomorrow. Sorry again for all the delays, but it was held back in hopes to be used for a promotion that never happened. Oh fooey!
Nocturna League 4 - Great progress so far, Expect it to be a Christmas present from me to you~<3 Happy holidays!
Operation *whisperwhisper* - It's going well, but it's such a huge secret I can't tell you just what it is. ETA early 2016.
